A few recent finds from second-hand bookshops and an antiquarian bookshop. 📚✨🤓
1. Paul Morand, “Journal inutile”: Volumes 1 (1968–1972) and 2 (1963–1976), @la_nrf @editions_gallimard 2001. 💛 Paul Morand kept several diaries throughout his life: this is the most recent and the most voluminous, running to over 1,600 pages! 😵💫 In the index of proper names, Marcel Proust features prominently. Morand knew Proust well; Proust wrote the preface to “Tendres Stocks” for him in 1921. 🖋️
2. Léon Daudet, “Souvenirs et polémiques”, @editions_bouquins @robert_laffont 2015. 💙 Léon Daudet, son of Alphonse and brother of Lucien, was a close friend of Proust and a champion (in his own way) of French literature. It was he who secured the Prix Goncourt 🌟 for Proust on 10 December 1919 and shouldered the controversy that followed. Proust is mentioned several times in this hefty volume of memoirs: literary salons, literary life, and Parisian society at the turn of the century. 🫀
3. Walter Benjamin, “On Proust”, published by NOUS, 2015. ❤️ Because Walter Benjamin is often cited in the Proustian bibliography and, to date, I’ve never read him. 🫣
