“André Devambez: the dizzying heights of the imagination”

Translated from French.

“André Devambez: the dizzying heights of the imagination” 🖼️✨

A superb exhibition organised by @petitpalais_musee from 9 September 2022 to 5 February 2023 (extended). 🤓

Devambez was born four years before Proust. A professional illustrator, he designed posters, illustrated items and comic strips for various newspapers.

But he is also an excellent painter, who received an academic education and studied for four years at the @villa_medici in Rome: he paints portraits of his family, pays tribute to the soldiers of the 1914 war and explores a range of perspectives, particularly bird’s-eye views, to bring his compositions to life and offer his contemporaries a fresh perspective. 🛸🚀

Although little known today, André Devambez is a well-rounded, sincere, funny and authentic artist. Like Proust, he bears witness to the upheavals of his time: modernity (the telephone, the aeroplane, advertising), war, and the emergence of a young readership (thanks to Jules Ferry’s law making schooling compulsory for all). ☝🏻

The exhibition has just been extended and it’s easy to get to, even without a booking. A word of advice: do go along! ❤️‍🩹
